Explain We are proposing the addition of three different concentration to the Exercise and Sports Science degree (one concentration is our current program). The credit hours for each concentration are equal and is equivalent to what students are currently required to complete.

Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This request has been made in order to prepare for accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE). Recently, both the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) have announced changes in the requirements for eligibility to sit for their respective certification examinations. The most notable change is that candidates for certification must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited program (CAAHEP, CASCE). Accreditation from these organizations will allow students to be eligible to sit for the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Exercise Physiologist exam (CAAHEP) and the National Strength and Conditioning Associations Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam (CASCE). The proposed Exercise Science Professional Concentration is designed to meet the CAAHEP accreditation standards and the Strength and Conditioning Concentration is designed to meet CASCE accreditation standards. Additionally, these concentrations were added to meet student needs, as many exercise and sport science majors go on to graduate degree programs that have varying prerequisite courses. Therefore, the proposed Pre-Allied Health Professions Concentration would provide students with the opportunity to not only complete all required EXSS courses but also the flexibility to complete prerequisites for graduate degree programs.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This request will have a positive impact on our existing academic programs. These proposed concentration will allow students to finish their Exercise and Sport Science Major with an experience that matches their professional goal following graduation. Additionally, the requested concentration represent a required step in the accreditation process which, once achieved, will serve as verification that national standards and guidelines have been met within the program.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

While there are no financial costs associated with this request, this request is to prepare for future accreditation, which does have a financial cost. The total cost of initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is estimated at $2,750 (application fee and on-site review fee), followed by $1050 in annual fees. The initial accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE) is estimated at $6,000 (application fee and accreditation fee), followed by a $1,000 annual fee.
