SOC 481 Q* Environmental Inequality and Justice - 3 credits. Prereq: SOC 101 or SOC 102; junior standing, or permission of the instructor. This course explores research and theories of environmental justice scholarship within sociology, and the application of these concepts to the unequal distribution of environmental contamination across communities. Environmental justice is used as a framework to assess disproportionate burdens of environmental contamination affecting communities of color and low-income communities; evaluate claims made by groups affected by these issues; and examine the policy, protest, and civil society responses communities engage in to address environmental inequity and injustice, including criminal charges and prosecution. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

This class build on the sociology department's focus on social inequality, as well as our expanding programs in social justice and criminal justice. The proposed course examines 1) how social inequalities impact both access to safe and healthy environments and exposure to unhealthy environmental concerns, and 2) the ways that communities organize to address environmental inequalities, whether that be through activism and/or the criminal justice system. As environmental crises continue to shape out world in profound ways, courses like this prepare our students for career options related to assessing the ways in which inequalities based on race or gender or class exacerbate environmental harm and ways that harm can be redressed.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

This class will support expanding academic programs in sustainability, social justice, and criminal justice.
