Current catalog description

(Prereq: EDML 425 and EDML 445)(Coreq: Choose one from EDML 490, EDML 491, or EDML 492) The development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for instruction in English/Language Arts in the middle grades and for the integration of the areas of the curricular concentration. Standards-based instructional planning, integration of concepts, developmentally appropriate instructional strategies, appropriate assessment techniques, and implementation of planned instructional units will be addressed. A clinical field experience at a middle school site is required and included in this course. F

EDML 489 Methods for Teaching English Language Arts at the Middle and Secondary Level (3 credits) (Prereq: EDML 445 or EDSC 400) The development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for instruction in English/Language Arts in the middle and secondary grades and for the integration of the areas of the curricular concentration. Standards-based instructional planning, integration of concepts, developmentally appropriate instructional strategies, appropriate assessment techniques, and implementation of planned instructional units are addressed. Justification For Request

What research has led to this request?

Effective July 2023, the state is expected to adjust all secondary licensure programs from grades 9-12 to grades 7-12. Per conversations with the state, merging middle and secondary methods courses is appropriate to reflect these changes. Additionally, the development of an undergraduate ELA Education degree necessitates the use of an undergraduate methods course. This course will serve students in the new secondary programs, along with those in the existing middle level programs.

What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?

The development of the new programs should result in an increase in students. This is a benefit, particularly in areas where enrollment is typically below average.

What financial costs are associated with this request?

None

If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?

We are simply adjusting a preexisting class to accept a broader range of education students.
