Title IX workshop held at CCU

Coastal Carolina University hosted a Continuing Legal Education seminar for attorneys on Jan. 26, with more than 50 attorneys from around the state gathered in the Alford Ballroom to learn about Title IX and how it applies to higher education. The workshop. titled "Alcohol & Drugs: Navigating the Impacts of Substance Use and Abuse in Students and Lawyers Alike," featured Denise Perez, Title IX investigator and EEO Investigator; Jennie Cassidy, assistant vice president for Campus Life and Student Engagement; and Travis Overton, vice president for executive initiatives/chief of staff and acting dean of students.

Attendees learned the complexities of a Title IX investigation on a college campus and the University's obligation to investigate and resolve complaints of sexually discriminatory behavior, while exploring the various prevention methods and resources available to students. Additionally, participants walked away understanding interim remedies and actions plans resulting from a violation of the Code of Student Conduct.

To conclude the session, CCU welcomed Robert Turnbull, Esq., on behalf of Lawyers Helping Lawyers, a program of the South Carolina Bar that assists legal professionals by providing referral services, peer support and monitoring services. Lawyers Helping Lawyers is a confidential member service of the South Carolina Bar and is available to help South Carolina lawyers in obtaining assistance as well as treatment.

The Office of University Counsel would like to thank Denise Perez, Jennie Cassidy and Travis Overton for making the workshop such a success with their presentations! Additionally, the Office of University Counsel would like to extend special thanks to President David DeCenzo for taking the time to kick off the workshop and welcome the guests to campus.
