Public Safety has new drug drop box

Coastal Carolina University's Department of Public Safety now has a medication/drug drop box for unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

The drop box is located in the main lobby of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Building at 255 University Blvd. on campus. It is available to the public during normal business hours from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The contents will be collected and prepared for disposal in a manner that is eco-friendly and in accordance with federal and state laws.
DPS is working in partnership with the Horry CAST Coalition and Shoreline Behavioral Health Services, through funding received from the Empowering Communities for Healthy Outcomes (ECHO) grant.

This program not only helps to protect the environment, but can also deter the usage of prescription drugs by unintended parties. Studies show that the majority of the prescription drug abusers obtain the medicines from home medicine cabinets of friends and family.

Please be sure to remove all labels with identifying information from the bottles before disposal and make sure that the caps are tightly fastened. DPS personnel also ask that you do not drop off needles, inhalers, hydrogen peroxide, liquids/ointments/lotions, aerosol cans or thermometers.

This is an anonymous service and contact with law enforcement personnel is not required. There are currently 13 drop box locations in Horry and Georgetown counties.
