University Communication hires new internal communications coordinator, newsletter editor

Melanie Smith, "Mel" for short, joined the Office of University Communication team on Sept. 1 as the new internal communications coordinator after longtime staffer and Atheneum editor Mona Prufer retired on Aug. 31. Smith serves as the University editor and the faculty/staff newsletter editor in her new role.

Smith, originally from Bel Air, Md., graduated from West Virginia University in May 2018. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Previously, Smith served as news director of the radio station U92 FM, founder and managing editor of a campus lifestyle magazine, as well as a writer for the Morgantown newspaper. In her free time, Smith enjoys running on the beach, traveling and interior decorating. Although she misses Old Bay and Chesapeake blue crabs, Smith is excited to join the CCU community and make Myrtle Beach her new home.
