May 7 fundraiser luncheon features S.C. author

South Carolina author and conservationist Mary Alice Monroe is the featured speaker for the First Book Spring Author Luncheon on Saturday, May 7 at Bonefish Grill in Myrtle Beach. The luncheon is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and tickets are $20. Most of the proceeds will go to buy books for children in need.

Tickets may be purchased from CCU staff and faculty members Margene Willis (2694), Mona Prufer  (2087) and Megan McIlreavy (2728), who are on the local advisory board. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.firstbook/horrycountysc.

Monroe will be reading from and discussing her new book, "The Butterfly's Daughter," which comes out the week of the luncheon. She is the bestselling author of 12 books and lives ini Charleston.

The mission of the group is to raise money to provide new books to children of low income families who cannot afford to buy books. Local programs that work with children and have a literacy component apply for grants to the local group.

Door prizes from local businesses will be given away through drawings. Call for more information.
