Teal goes green at CCU

As of Sept. 15, here are the current numbers of plastic bottles saved from the water stations, in order of installation, since July:

1. Kimbel Library – 7,893

2. Arcadia Hall – 2,922

3. Campus Recreation – 13,584

4. Student Center – 1,651

5. Coastal Science Center – 419 (most recently installed)

Water stations are being added to the Prince Building and the Wall Building soon. 

Weirdest items collected during Campus Salvage (when students moved out) last May:

• Hot dog warmer
• Monkey lamp
• Outdoor sink
• Halloween costumes (clowns, animals)
• Easy Bake oven
• Christmas decor
• Plastic toy swords
• Easter baskets
• Valentine’s Stuffed Animals

Most plentiful items from Campus Salvage:

• Fridges
• TVs
• Microwaves
• Plastic shelves/ drawers on wheels
• Floor lamps
• Shower caddys
• Trash cans
• Coffee makers
• Vacuum cleaners
• Wall mirrors
• Bathroom rugs
• Bedding
• Clothing and shoes

Campus Recycling:
Amount of recycling (from June 30, 2010-July 1,2011):

  • Commingle (plastic, glass, metal, paper and cardboard): 32.67 tons
  • Office Paper: 45.36 tons
  • Cardboard: 76.80 tons
  • Scrap Metal: 14.89 tons
  • Cooking Oil (from Aramark): 6.89 tons (13,780 pounds)
  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs: 1,900 lbs.
  • Ink Cartridges: 576 lbs.
  • Batteries: 1,294 lbs.
  • Yard Debris (from Facilities): 11.64 tons

Random Facts:
At one event on Prince Lawn, students consumed more than 80 pizzas within three hours. All the boxes were recycled.

Amount of cardboard recycled on Move-In Weekend: 4.665 tons

From the Sept. 3 and Sept. 10 home football games (plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard and paper): 1.32 tons (from tailgating and stadium)
