National Career Development Week celebrated

Coastal Carolina University participated in the National Career Development Week (Nov. 12-16) in a variety of ways that really made a difference for CCU students and employers.

CCU Career Services coordinated a National Career Development Day on Nov. 14 that matched CCU students with local employers for mock interviews, resume critiques, internship and employer panels. Employers included Wyndham Vacation Ownership, DSL Marketing, Verizon Wireless, City of North Myrtle Beach, Mondelez International and others. Lunch was graciously donated by Chick-fil-A, and seven local Chick-fil-A leaders took time to share business advice and insight through a panel.

“This was the first time Career Services put together an event for this national day of career development, and we are very happy with the turnout," said Eileen Soisson, coordinator of employer relations. "We hope to have even more students next year – it is such a key career preparatory experience and networking opportunity."

Career Services also participated in two television segments for FOX News at 10, filmed at WBTW News 13, for Career Week. Robert Bulsza, director of internships and service learning, shared information about resumes and the importance of professionally presenting yourself through this important career document. Soisson’s segment was focused on “What Not To Wear” for a career fair or interview. This news piece was brought to life with four CCU students serving as models showcasing examples of inappropriate attire.

Meagan Nowacoski, Laura Hordis, Matthew Peck and Cortez Miller modeled how to dress professionally as well as looks that might turn potential employers away. Hordis (intentionally) wore an outfit more appropriate for the clubs than the office to show the ladies what NOT to wear. Peck had the overall look with a suit, tie and dress shoes but then Eileen pointed out his unshaven look.

“Never give an employer an excuse not to want to talk to you” Soisson said.
