Arendt wins fellowship form S.C. Arts Commission

James Arendt, lecturer and director of the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University, has been awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship from the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC).

The SCAC board awards four fellowships to South Carolina artists in the categories of visual arts, craft, media production and media screenwriting. Each artist receives $5,000.

The S.C. Arts Commission board approves fellowships based on recommendations made by out-of-state review panelists who select fellows based solely on a review of anonymous work samples.

Arendt recently won the $50,000 grand prize at ArtFields, a juried art competition and festival held in Lake City in April.

Arendt, who joined the CCU staff in 2011, is a native of Flint, Mich. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Mich., and a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting from USC.?His work has been exhibited regionally and internationally. Prior to joining CCU, Arendt was the gallery director at FAB Gallery at South Carolina State University and an art instructor at the University of South Carolina.
