CCU student West travels to Haiti

Tripp West, a Coastal Carolina University student in the dual degree program, just returned from a trip to Haiti with a Clemson University engineering group to help with a water supply project in the small village of Cange.

West is the son of Chris and Rose Marie Johnson and Don and Peggy West. Rose Marie Johnson is coordinator of risk management and strategic planning. Chris Johnson is a senior major gifts officer in University Advancement.

West traveled with three other civil engineering students from Clemson. West is completing his final semester at Clemson and will be the first CCU student to graduate this May with a dual degree in physics and engineering.

Residents of the village get their water from a spring about 800 feet down a mountain. An outdated piping system brings the water uphill, but the system is so old and worn that it operates only twice daily, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and people stand in long lines at water stations to fill their jugs, the students said.
