Celebrating the Earth with sustainable activities

by Sellers

The month of April is full of events and activities relating to sustainability and going green. Eco-Rep Leaders will be spearheading many of the educational events, including Landfill on the Lawn, the Bottle Walk and Weigh the Waste, to teach others about waste reduction and environmental issues.

The Earth Fair, a collaborative event with Campus Recreation and the Swain Scholars, is set for Wednesday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. The Farmers Market, in partnership with the Waccamaw Market Cooperative, will be Wednesday, April 29, on Prince Lawn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Plastic Paradise,” a documentary about the plastic waste in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, will be screened on April 22 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Theater for free with free popcorn.

As a special part of Earth Month, Eco-Rep leaders will be conducting waste audits for all offices on campus for free. Participants will be eligible for prizes and an opportunity to work toward a green office certification. To schedule your office waste audit, contact Jennifer Sellers at Sustain Coastal, jennifer@coastal.edu.

Teal recycling bins have arrived and are available for $6 each for faculty and staff. Departments may order bins through the Facilities Work Order system or may purchase them personally by contacting Jeremy Monday at #6954 or recycle@coastal.edu. These bins will be available for free as a part of an activity during most of our Wednesday educational events on Prince Lawn during the month of April on a first-come, first-served basis for anyone.

Posters for Earth Month were designed by Gwendolyn Washington and Katie Riley, students from professor Paul Olsen's graphic design class.
