Sarah Rabon cited for service, cheerfulness, excellence
Sarah Rabon seems to be everywhere. You might see her at a CCU baseball or football game, you might see her at a heart walk or a Relay for Life.Her reasons for participating in the health fundraisers are personal. She is a two-time cancer survivor. Rabon was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago and kidney cancer two years later, having part of her kidney removed followed by other treatments. She has been in remission for 12 years. Despite her battles, Rabon still finds time to help others.
Rabon, administrative assistant in the Spadoni College of Education at Coastal Carolina University, is the recipient of the 2010 Support Staff Excellence Award. She was cited for her competence, efficiency, hard work and for the personal interest she takes in helping students.
"She is the epitome of the heart of the University, as indicated through her service, cheerfulness, love for students and excellence in all that she undertakes," says Patricia Piver, director of clinical experiences and student services.
Rabon is actively involved in Relay for Life and other similar events, including the volleyball team’s Breast Cancer Awareness event. Rabon has gone beyond her duties not only when she purchased honor stoles for students who couldn’t afford them for commencement, but also when she purchased Christmas items for a student with five children, including a child with a serious illness.
"I feel very honored because I think Coastal has an exceptional group of staff on campus, and there are many others who are very deserving," says Rabon about her recent reception of the award. "The faculty, staff and student workers make my job easier and help me to do exceptional work."
Rabon is a native of Aynor and joined the University staff in 1995. She has been working in the college of education for the past three years. She previously worked in the department of facilities planning and management (transportation services) and the human resources department. Before coming to CCU, Rabon worked in the accounting office of So-pa-co, a military rations packaging company in Mullins.
Rabon is married to Larry Rabon, and they have two children, a daughter, Alison Rabon Martin, and a son, Stephen Rabon. She also has five grandchildren ages 3 to 12, who attend Horry County schools. Rabon has two dogs as well, Sheltie, a sheltie collie and Patches, a blue heeler.
Rabon spends her free time with her grandchildren and stays involved in University activities. She regularly attends campus and sporting events, and she was a co-captain of a team for the Spadoni College of Education Heart Walk.
