CCU: Here we grow some more!
Coastal Carolina University is building and growing to accommodate our student population. Here are some updates on current construction projects:
Academic Office/Classroom Building II
Ground has been broken, and construction of the new 53,000-square-foot building is under way. The $18 million facility located on Chanticleer Drive East next to the Wall College of Business will provide approximately 60 faculty and staff offices, ITS offices and computer space, 16 classrooms with 25 to 35 seats, and a “grab and go” restaurant operated by Aramark. The new facility will be completed in March 2017.
Brooks Stadium
Brooks Stadium will undergo renovation at a cost not to exceed $38 million. The expansion will increase the seating to 20,000 seats to meet NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) requirements. There are currently 9,124 seats. A higher education revenue bond issue will fund the expansion, which is required by the University’s athletic affiliation with the Sun Belt Conference, effective July 1. A final design has not been approved.
Coastal Band Hall
New practice rooms will be constructed in the existing Coastal Band Hall, and a proposed new building adjacent to the existing Band Hall is requested.
Coastal Science Center Wave Pool
A new wave pool and additional office space is under construction in Coastal Science Center Room 190A.
Johnson Auditorium in the Wall Building
The auditorium is getting new carpeting, plus the foyer and auditorium will have new paint. The project will get under way during Spring Break.
The Wall Building will be renovated on all three floors, including painting all offices, classrooms, hallways, conference rooms, restrooms, etc. Carpet will be replaced in all the offices and tiered classrooms that do not have tile. The classrooms will get new sound panels installed to match the painted wall colors. ITS will be replacing some of the cabling to the offices and classrooms. The renovation of the third floor will begin May 9.
Multipurpose Recreation and Athletic Field
Construction is complete on a new recreation and athletic field adjacent to the tennis complex on Allied Drive. Students and athletes will begin using the field this spring.
Science II Annex
The Science Annex II is on target for a substantial completion date of April 29 and a final completion date of May 21. Flooring on the first floor has been installed, along with lab casework; wood doors are being installed; restroom fixtures are being set; and finish painting is underway. Also, the elevator has been completed, and the general contractor has started on the stairs and decorative railings in the lobby. The second floor progress is close behind with the same activities underway on the first floor. The third floor is in the process of setting lab casework, installing terrazzo flooring in the common areas and completing the ceiling grid so overhead inspections can be completed. The HVAC system piping and duct has been flushed, tested and made ready for provisional operation. On the exterior, all the utilities’ (natural gas, water, electric and sewer) connections have been made. The exterior courtyard’s curved seating area that will connect with the pedestrian walkways has been placed so the work on the sidewalks can begin. All of the underground storm drainage system has been completed. As soon as weather permits, the forming of driveways, curbing and sidewalks will start.
Singleton Building Renovation
The Edward M. Singleton Building was the first building constructed on campus in 1962 and is one of the historical icons on campus. The renovation project includes upgrading the facility to meet current accessibility requirements, upgrading mechanical and electrical infrastructure, adding a fire sprinkler system and reconfiguring the internal office layout. All asbestos was removed from the facility prior to the start of the renovation project.
This project will reclaim the old library space, turning it into a special events type ballroom. The President's office suite will remain in the same general area but is designed to create an open and accessible feel to visitors. The new floor plan makes the best use of the existing structure and window openings, defining a logical layout that maximizes the number of offices area at the perimeter of the building. The modules for the layout of these areas are flexible enough that spaces can be used for offices, open-plan workstations, storage, filing, workrooms and conference areas. Two new two-stop elevators are being added to the building.
The existing Dawsey Conference Room and lobby will maintain their current look and character by preserving the existing paneling and molding. Substantial completion of the project is currently scheduled for August 2016, with a final completion set for September 2016.
Soccer Complex
This new complex will improve the current conditions of varsity men and women soccer teams that currently lack facilities due to property constraints. In the past years, the University has hosted NCAA soccer playoff events for our nationally ranked men’s soccer team and could only accommodate 500 spectators. The new facility will include features for fans, media and players such as locker rooms, meeting rooms, officials’ locker room, public restrooms and concessions. In addition, it will include proper lighting for night events as well as a parking lot for team buses and spectators. The new complex will be located on the east campus adjacent to the newly constructed tennis complex and practice facility. The projected cost is $5 million, and the architect is The Boudreaux Group
with SportsPLAN Studio.
Student Health Services
The floor covering in the lobby area and hallways is being replaced, and the interior spaces of the entire building will be repainted.
Student Housing Phase II
Construction for the final two buildings – Teal and CINO halls – is underway for student housing. They are part of Phase II and will open in Fall 2016. They are located behind Eaglin and Ingle Halls and the HTC Center. The three-story residence halls will provide coeducational housing for 320 first-year students per building. Suites will have five double-occupancy bedrooms with shared bath space with multiple sinks, toilets and showers. Community features include professional grade community kitchen and multipurpose program room in each building, convenience store, free laundry, study room on each wing and large TV lounges. The buildings have elevators and are ADA accessible.
University Place Dining Hall
This project is for a renovation/addition to the current space and the demolition and construction of a new structure for a dine-in food service facility at University Place. The facility will be based on Aramark’s “Fresh Food Company” design where food is prepped, cooked and served all in front of the customer. University Place houses approximately 2,100 students. There is currently a takeout option available at University Place, but this will provide students with the additional option of dine-in food service as well as increased food selection.
