Update on ongoing and upcoming projects on campus

Sandy Williams, director of Facilities Planning and Management, updates us on ongoing and upcoming projects.

• The Adkins Field House – furniture is currently being installed in the building, and occupants have started moving in as of June 1.

• New end zone bleachers will be installed late July or early August.

• Energy Efficiency projects related to stimulus funding (lighting, lighting sensor and demand ventilation control upgrades) for the Library, Prince and Wall buildings will be completed during summer.

• Baseball Hitting Facility – project should be substantially complete by mid-August.

• Student Center first floor renovation – This project should begin in June, starting with the game room; completion date to be determined.

• The Will Garland Academic Enhancement Center project is complete.

• Central Energy Plant and Bryan Information Commons (library addition) projects should be bid out in August, with construction to begin shortly thereafter.

• Academic Classroom/Office Building – An architect has been selected to begin design phase, with proposed completion by August 2012.

• Wall Building first and second floor hallways are currently being repainted.

• Student Recreation/Convocation Center has been bid, and construction is anticipated to begin in June.

• Swain Science Annex construction will begin this fall.

• Timber removal is taking place on campus this summer to prepare for upcoming construction projects and the proposed 500-space parking lot behind Kingston Hall.

• Portables planned for removal from campus during summer 2010 include WBAX 2, 3, 6, and 8 and SCI 3 and 4.

• Parking lot improvements for Brooks Stadium, Coastal Science Center and Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies planned for summer 2010.

• Extension of University Boulevard across U.S. 501 to be completed during summer.

• Chad Beaty Bell Memorial to be completed this summer.

• Dorm improvements include: new flooring in Dogwood and Elm, painting in Palmetto and Oak, ceiling and duct replacement in Palmetto and Oak, heat pump replacement in Maple, shower replacements in Maple, Cypress and 3rd floor of Waccamaw, new flooring on third floor of Santee, sidewalk improvements in Woods, addition of two gazebos, and construction of a picnic shelter.

Projects by other entities:

• Horry County Higher Education Commission will complete the construction of new intramural fields on East Campus this summer.

• Horry Georgetown Technical College will complete construction of a roundabout on University Boulevard this summer.

• Coastal Educational Foundation is working with the Jackson family on proposed construction of a chapel.
