'Shark man' featured on National Geographic program

Dan Abel was part of the National Geographic Wild program “When Sharks Attack – Carolina Chaos” recently. Coastal Carolina University's resident "Shark Man," Abel gave 27 media interviews after some shark attacks on the North Carolina coast in June and July 2015.

Abel, associate professor in the Department of Marine Science in the College of Science, is known as CCU's shark expert due to his many years of research in the area. He has taught the Biology of Sharks in Bimini, the Bahamas, course, one of the first and still one of the few in the United States, for more than 15 years. He conducted his dissertation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography on heart function in sharks, and currently studies the ecology of sharks in South Carolina waters.
