CCU Rotaract and international students shop for kids

Coastal Carolina University’s Rotaract, the student Rotary club, recently linked with the international students club to shop at Wal-Mart for clothing for needy grade school students throughout the school year. A Rotary grant funded the shopping event.

More than 60 people spent $1,400 to supply Waccamaw Elementary and Carolina Forest Elementary schools with clothing needed during the school year.

“We were able to purchase 48 pairs of shorts, 88 T-shirts, 100 pairs of underwear, 100 pairs of flip-flops, 105 pairs of pants and 185 pairs of socks,” said Theresa Calabrese, Rotaract president. “This was only the first round of shopping!”

“We left the University around 9:30 a.m. on a CCU motor coach. When we arrived, we broke into 10 groups of six. Each group had an American student as a team leader that was given the list of what was needed to purchase,” said Calabrese, president of Rotaract.

“We were able to bring people together from different cultures to participate in something so universal – service. Rotary’s motto, “Service above self," was put into action shared by many people.”
