OLLI at CCU seeking faculty/staff teachers

Dear CCU faculty and staff,

Would you be interested in teaching students who are well-read, knowledgeable, inquisitive and enthusiastic? Students who appreciate you and show that appreciation readily?

If so, you are invited to teach for the Osher Lifelong Learning Program at CCU. Classes range from one-time 1-hour lectures to 3-hour sessions meeting twice a week for 8 weeks. You choose your topic, your dates, your time slot and your location. We offer noncredit classes for OLLI members (ages 50-97) at the Coastal Carolina Science Center, the Myrtle Beach Education Center (900 79th Ave., N.), the Litchfield Education Center (Litchfield Landing in Pawleys Island), and the Georgetown Education Center (903 Front Street). Compensation for CCU personnel is $25/hr, or you can elect to donate your time for service credit.

Our Fall 2017 semester goes from Sept.18 to Dec.15. More details and suggestions for planning and marketing your classes are included in the attachment. Submit your course proposals online at this link by April 17.

Below are testimonials from your colleagues who have enjoyed teaching for OLLI this semester:

Sherri Restauri, director, Coastal Office of Online Learning

Working with the OLLI students was one of the most enjoyable volunteer teaching opportunities I’ve had in almost two decades of teaching. My students were incredibly motivated to learn—they asked tons of questions—and were completely engaged in our topic (Social Media Tools). They also willingly put in extra effort outside of work to prepare, and stayed over every single night to ask more questions. Great experience with OLLI.

Joseph Fitsanakis, assistant professor, Intelligence and National Security Studies

I have been teaching in continuing-education and lifelong-learning programs since 2013, but I have never before come across a program that is as well organized as OLLI. Not only is the administrative support first class, but the students themselves are of exceptional quality. They are highly educated and experienced, but remain curious and open-minded. I find myself constantly inspired by their energy, dedication to learning and love of life. Teaching at OLLI has been one the greatest decisions I ever made.

Angelos Hannides, assistant professor, Department of Marine Science

I think that it is important to relay my science to everyone. Ultimately, I am being sponsored by the people of this country and I think that they should care about what I do and why it is important to them and their lives. Through OLLI, I can confront the challenge of explaining technical aspects of my work in a fairly safe environment. Feedback from people who are out there living their lives really makes my life easier as well, because, if I do a good job of communicating, they themselves will turn around and point out what’s important to them out of everything I do and talked about.

Feel free to call or email if you want to discuss ideas for classes or any other aspect of our program.
