Reacting to the Past Workshop - Deadline for Registration: July 24
Friday, Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 12, 8:30 a.m. – noon

Reacting to the Past (RTTP), an experiential role-playing pedagogy, offers successful tools to engage students in meaningful conversations about historical, social and scientific issues across disciplines. Students assume the character and agenda of historical figures and work with primary texts to strengthen their analytical and rhetorical skills. Assessment has shown that RTTP increases student engagement and retention rates.

This two-day workshop offers participants the opportunity to engage in a shortened version of one of two RTTP games, either "Greenwich Village, 1913: Suffrage, Labor, and the New Woman" or "Charles Darwin, the Copley Medal, and the Rise of Naturalism." Day One (Friday) will introduce players to Reacting to the Past and its pedagogy, followed by two sessions of compressed (and fun!) game play. Day Two (Saturday) will include the final session of game play, followed by a debriefing session, and a panel of students and faculty will be available to answer questions about syllabus design, student engagement, accessibility and other issues.

Day 1: Friday, Aug. 11 – 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Brittain Hall 101), Day 2: Saturday, Aug. 12 – 8:30 - noon (Brittain Hall 101)
Continental breakfast will be provided both days, and lunch will be served the first day of the workshop. For more information about RTTP, please check out the consortium's website at https://reacting.barnard.edu/.

Space for this workshop is limited. Please sign up by July 24 to reserve a spot, and then send an email to tgaskin@coastal.edu to choose a game. You can choose either game listed below:

•        Greenwich Village, 1913: Suffrage, Labor, and the New Woman
•        Charles Darwin, the Copley Medal, and the Rise of Naturalism
If you encounter problems with registration or have a general question, please send an email to tgaskin@coastal.edu.
