Announcing new University College staff

Sara Hottinger is the new Dean of University College.

She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and women’s studies from Beloit College and a Ph.D. in feminist studies from the University of Minnesota. Prior to her arrival at CCU, she was a faculty member at Keene State College in New Hampshire, where she also served as chair of women’s and gender studies, associate dean, and interim dean in the School of Arts and Humanities. Hottinger has experience in developing innovative interdisciplinary courses and degrees, led efforts to establish integrative general education programs, and has recently published the book, "Inventing the Mathematician: Gender, Race, and Our Cultural Understanding of Mathematics."
 
Andrew Busch joins Coastal as an assistant professor in CCU's Honors Program. He earned a bachelor's degree in history at Illinois Wesleyan University, a Master of Arts in American studies and history at Purdue University, and a Ph.D. from the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He taught in the American Studies Program and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas. Busch’s new book, "City in a Garden: Environmental Transformations and Racial Justice in Twentieth Century Austin, Texas," was just published this past July.
 
Gabriela Perez-Alvarado has joined the CCU Honors Program as a lecturer. She received a B.S. in chemistry from Missouri State University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Maryland. During her postdoctoral fellowship at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, her research involved the structural studies of proteins important for transcription and translation regulation. She continued her research on proteins that regulate gene expression as an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University. Most recently, Perez-Alvarado served as a research assistant professor at Iowa State University.
 
Dee Pelegrino joins Coastal as the new director of the Mathematics Learning Center. She has worked as college and high school instructor, a learning resource supervisor and a math lab tutor at several institutions. Pelegrino earned an MBA from Robert Morris University and a master's degree in mathematics education from Chadron State University.
