Leadership awards announced at CCU

A Coastal Carolina University graduating senior who started a community camp for kids to learn how to fish is the winner of the school's Ronald D. Lackey Service Award, the University's highest honor for a student who engages in service to the community.

Steven O. Vanden Heuvel, a finance major from Houston, Texas, was awarded the prize at the Student Involvement and Leadership Awards ceremony held recently in Wheelwright Auditorium. This event recognizes CCU's student organizations, student leaders and programming. A committee of eight faculty and staff members reviewed the campuswide nominations and vote on winners.

Vanden Heuvel started the Carolina Kids Fishing program as a Wall Fellow in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. He also received the Step Up Award for Excellent Leadership in 2014, was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society and the Dean's Student Advisory Council. Vanden Heuvel held leadership positions as a mentor, secretary and president of CCU's Saltwater Anglers Club, and he volunteered at Tara Hall home for boys.

* Shawn Miller, of Greensburg, Pa., Community Service by an Individual

* Amanda Siegrist, assistant professor, recreation and sport management, Adviser of the Year

* Harry Titus, of Mayesville, S.C., Student Leader of the Year

* Alpha Kappa Psi, Outstanding Community Service by a Non-Greek Organization

* Outstanding (Greek) Community Service, Sigma Phi Epsilon

* Most Improved Student Organization, Marketing Club

* Shayla Anderson, of Waldorf, Md., Unsung Hero

* Pi Kappa Phi, Bell Tower Award. The award is given to the organization that successfully completed an outstanding campus program/event during the 2015- 2016 academic year.

* Ashley Pribble, of Pekin, Ill., Student Organization President

* Patrick Sullivan, of Middletown, Conn.,Greek Man

* Sabrina Alt, of Churchville, Md., Greek Woman

* Educational Program, National Panhellenic Conference 2015 Fall Convention

* Pride and the COAST, Collaboration

* The COAST, Teal Traditions. The Teal Traditions Award is given to the organization that successfully completed an outstanding program/event, which has continued for at least three consecutive years.

* Alpha Xi Delta, New Initiative

* Erin Ortiz, of Chesapeake, Va., Greek Chapter President

* Karly Southall, of Nitro, W.Va., Haven Hart Award. This award is presented annually to a CCU senior who has served as a role model to other students through his/her campus involvement and who has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA.
