Awards were presented to Coastal Carolina University students and faculty for outstanding academic achievement and recognition at the annual Honors Convocation held on May 5 in Wheelwright Auditorium.

Emily Forzono, a marine science major from Simsbury, Conn., received the Distinguished Student Award that recognizes a student with superior accomplishments in both academics and campus service. She is the 2016 Marine Science Student of the Year and has been on the President's List or Dean's List every semester during her time at CCU. She has done research at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory in Georgetown and completed environmental internships at Dominion Millstone Power Station and Island Fisheries in Connecticut. Forzono intends to pursue a master's degree in fisheries science.

Monica Wappel, a lecturer of Spanish on the CCU faculty since 2011, was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year, an honor bestowed by students on a "caring and dynamic faculty member who is always available to help students learn." A native of Canada, Wappel is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Italian. "She is an engaging professor who is active on campus and in the community," according to students.

Mark Flynn, assistant professor of communication specializing in public health at CCU since 2012, was named Distinguished Adviser of the Year by students. Students say that "Professor Flynn is incredibly helpful as a professor and adviser, extremely personable and very intelligent and passionate about his work. He always has a positive attitude."

Departmental awards were also presented to students in recognition of outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the academic quality of their respective departments. Candidates were nominated by department faculty.
