Artist Barry R. Jones' work will be featured in his solo exhibition "Lesson 2," which opens Monday, May 16, and runs through Friday, June 24, in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Jones, a professor and chair of the Department of Art & Design at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., is a digital video and sound artist with far-ranging interests in music, the history of film, new technologies and social activism.

His work is about ethics, and it asks the oldest of questions: What does it mean to live a good life? What is our responsibility to each other, to our families, to those with disabilities, to the past? In the face of tragedy, how do we reaffirm that life is good?

"My work records my efforts to teach my children empathy and morals (Lesson 1, 2014) and give voice to members of my community (Common Hope, 2013) and those whose voice is often ignored (Voices, 2006)," says Jones in his artist's statement. "I hope to live an ethical life and to meet my responsibilities to others. This goal has led to a collection of stories, poems and texts that serve as a source to my work."

Jones earned his B.F.A. in photography at Austin Peay State University, and his M.F.A. in 3D studies at the University of South Carolina. He has exhibited works at SPACElab in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, Va., and in Istanbul, Sao Paulo and Madrid. His work was recently featured at the Brooks Museum in Memphis, Tenn., and he has two digital works in the permanent art base collection of the New Museum of Contemporary Art's new media branch, Rhizome, in New York City.

He lives in Clarksville with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children: Marlena, Aidan, Hope and Elliott.

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It serves as the primary visual laboratory for the Department of Visual Arts and is dedicated to advancing the education of visual artists while operating in the service of society.
