Computers, nature and personal growth are class topics

Computer, birding and public speaking classes are being offered for noncredit at Coastal Carolina University's Waccamaw Higher Education Center beginning Saturday, April 23. Registration is still open.

The Waccamaw Higher Education Center is at 140 Willbrook Blvd. west of the Hampton Inn on U.S. 17 in Litchfield. For more information on classes or to register, call 349-4030.

Birding at Hobcaw with Gary Phillip, birding columnist for The Sun News, features an early morning trek into the deep recesses of Hobcaw Barony for a look at the spring migration and nesting along the flyway. Wear long sleeves and bring bug spray. The class is offered in four Saturday sessions (choose one) from 7 to 11 a.m. on April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14, $25 each

Computer technology classes include:

- Microsoft Word: Expand your computing capabilities with MS Word. The class will teach participants to write letters, copy information from the Internet, develop a flyer, address envelopes or labels, and prepare a sign-up sheet/grid. Students are encouraged to bring projects to the class. Which will be led by Carol Rose. Basic computer knowledge required. Meets Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, 4 weeks, April 26 to May 17, $60

- Survey of Electronic Gadgetry: Join instructor Valerie Whiteman for an overview of the latest technological tools at our disposal. From the complexities of new age cell phones to palm pilots, digital photography and laptop computers, she will share practical knowledge as it applies to your daily life. One Saturday session, April 30, 9 a.m. to noon, $25.

Personal growth and skills:

- Heart-Connected Public Speaking: this workshop led by nationally known author and speaking trainer Margaret Hiller will teach participants to speak confidently in public settings, whether to a small group, a room full or an unknown television audience. One Saturday session, April 30, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., $50
