Escape the summer doldrums with a summer literary course, or explore the history of Pawleys Island by taking a noncredit course at Coastal Carolina University's Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield.

Registration is still open for "The Lost Generation," taught by Cliff Saunders, a poet and instructor at Coastal. Saunders will delve into writers such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein and e.e. cummings who were American expatriate writers living and writing in France during the Roaring Twenties. Classes start Monday, July 11 and meet Mondays from 3 to 5 p.m. through Aug. 15. Cost is $50.

"Summering on Pawleys Island in 1850" is also being offered by Sue Mushock-Myers in weekly capsules so that visitors can participate for a small fee and learn about Lowcountry lifestyles from the 1850s. The class begins Wednesday, July 13, and meets for four weeks on subsequent Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon through Aug. 3. Cost is $40.

The Waccamaw Higher Education Center is located at 140 Willbrook Blvd. off U.S. 17 in Litchfield next to the Hampton Inn.
