Author to discuss methods of teaching civic responsibility

February 24, 2006

Cathryn Berger Kaye, author of “The Complete Guide to Service Learning,” will present an interactive lecture and discussion on Thursday, March 2 from 7 to 9 p.m., titled “Civic Engagement: Using Research and Learning.” The event, which is free and open to the public, will held in the Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University.

Kaye will focus on teaching methods that help transform students into positive members of the community by creating a sense of civic responsibility. Those planning to attend are encouraged to contribute ideas.

Kaye has spent much of the last 20 years traveling the country to speak to educators and youth about civic engagement. She has worked with state departments of education, university faculty and teacher education students, school districts and K-12 teachers and administrators on issues of service-learning, civic responsibility, student leadership and respectful school communities. Kaye was the first person to receive the Inspirational Spirit Award from the Learn & Serve American program of the Corporation for National and Community Service. She will be the keynote speaker at the second annual PK-16 Educators and Administrators Conference in Columbia, titled “Creating Engaged Citizens Through Service and Reflection,” on March 6-8.
