‘Gendered Violence and Conflict’ film to be shown at CCU

March 7, 2006

The United Nations documentary “Gendered Violence and Conflict” will be shown on Wednesday, March 8 at 4:30 p.m. the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building, room 136. The event will feature Pamela Martin, assistant professor of politics and adviser of Coastal’s Global Studies Club, which is co-sponsoring the event with CCU’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program. The event is free and open to the public.

The documentary explores the increasing incidence of gender-based violence in emergency situations, particularly in Africa. It approaches gender as an international security issue and brings attention to the use and abuse of gender in war-torn Africa. The film also shows how victims of gender-based crimes are treated by their families and communities after they have been victimized. Another aspect of the documentary is how the U.N. should respond to this gender-based problem.
