Performing class to present variety show at CCU

July 21, 2006

A group of students ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens will present "Cool Jazz," a cabaret-style show, Saturday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. as part of a non-credit performance course offered through Coastal Carolina University's Lifelong Learning program. The show, which will be held at the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield, is free, but reservations are required as space is limited.

The show is the finale of an eight-week course called "Starshine Performance Training," taught by JoEllen Langley. Student performers include: Peg Bruno, Patricia Doherty, Agnes Duffy, Anita Durkan, Connie Galloway, Mollie Gratz, Elizabeth Gregg, Thomas Himmel, Judy Starth, Pat Thompson, Laura D'Anna, Pat David, Luis Del Pilar, Fay Donovan, Carol Finley, Shannon Hazelton, Joanne Lamm, Carson McCall, Ted Meldahl, Tom Yemm and Susann Yemm.

"Cool Jazz" will include singing, skits, comedy and performances of "Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce," "All That Jazz," "Swanee" and "The Lady is a Tramp" among others. Refreshments, compliments of Webster's Restaurant, will be served.

Classes are open to students from high school freshmen to senior citizens. The course encourages students to achieve confidence while singing, playing or speaking before the public. Each course culminates in a cabaret performance to which the public is invited. The types of talents showcased in the class include but are not limited to singing, dancing, instrumental performance, acting and comedy.

A second summer Starshine Performance Training course, focusing on Beach Music, will be offered at CCU's Waccamaw Higher Education Center on Thursdays, Aug. 10 to Sept. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. The course fee is $75.
