Coastal Carolina University professor Elsa Crites will lead a discussion on Argentina's "dirty war" and its depiction in the poetry of Juan Gelman on Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Waccamaw Higher Education Center of Litchfield. This event is free and open to the public.

In her discussion, titled "Poetry as a Way to Defy Death: Reading and Commentary of Juan Gelman's Poetry," Crites will talk about crimes against humanity committed during the state-sponsored terrorism instigated by the military government between 1976 and 1983.

The event is part of Coastal's "Unheard, Unseen, Unsolved" dialogue series, sponsored by the Board of Visitors of Coastal's Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Crites will focus on the writings of Gelman, whose highly acclaimed poetry deals with terrorism and the pain and anguish that stem from the "disappearance" of several friends and his only son. Crites is an assistant professor of foreign languages at Coastal. She earned a Ph.D. in Spanish in 1996 from Florida State University where she was named Outstanding Graduate Student.
