CCU Lifelong Learning announces NMB classes
The following courses will begin in April:
North Myrtle Beach
* Book Club with Caroline Ewing - Mondays, April 2 to May 7, 10 a.m. to noon, free. This club will meet once a week to discuss current and classic books selected by the group leader.
* Writing Memories with Caroline Ewing - Mondays, April 2 to May 7, 1 to 3 p.m., $40. The writing class will allow members to create personal stories, chronicles and writing collections through a six-weeks course.
* Backyard Habitat for Birds and Native Plants with Nancy Edelman - Monday, April 2, 1 to 3 p.m., free. Edelman will provide creative and environmentally friendly tips on creating a backyard gardening sanctuary.
* Judeo-Christian History Series with Norm Whiteley - Mondays, April 9 to 30, 1 to 3 p.m., $40. In this four-week course, students will explore the following topics: "Origins of the Bible," "Understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls," "The Historical Jesus" and "The Birth of Christianity."
* Art History: The Pre-Raphaelite Movement with Millie Doud - Tuesdays, April 3 to 24, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., $40. Doud will explore a fascinating period of art history in this four-week course.
* Batik I: Introduction to Painting on Silk with Alice Estes - Tuesdays, April 3 to May 8, 1:30 to 4 p.m., $85 plus additional materials. The basic skills of fabric painting and other art techniques will be presented through this six-week course.
* How to Take Better Pictures with Vic Pizzolato - Wednesdays, April 4 to May 9, 10 a.m. to noon, $75. Pizzolato will teach basic and detailed photographic techniques in this six-week course.
* Historic Islam with Sam Syme - Wednesdays, April 11 to May 2, 10 to 11:30 a.m., $40. This four week course will examine Islamic precepts and beliefs.

Photography Workshops at Waccamaw with Bill Jordan
Jordan has been a landscape photographer since 1968, switching wholly to digital and turning professional in 1999. He has developed and taught credit, noncredit and seminar courses in both digital photography and Photoshop for photographers over the past five years at the University of Massachusetts, Bay Path College, Greenfield Community College, Holyoke Community College, Furman University, the University of South Carolina and for the Carolina Nature Photographers' Association. He has published numerous articles in photographic periodicals and is currently writing a book entitled "Darkness to Light."
* April 21 to 22 - Introduction to Digital Photography (Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) $150+. This course addresses all aspects of digital photography including equipment choice, image composition and capture, image editing, image printing and archiving. Particular emphasis will be placed upon digital camera operation and image composition. Regular class time will be spent critiquing each other's work while getting solid ideas for improvement. Class format will be very open, creating an atmosphere where we can all learn from one another. The specific course content will be determined finally by the specific needs of the participants. We will use computers in the classroom as a dynamic reference tool to reinforce photographic skills on an ongoing basis, and to demonstrate, briefly, the power of image manipulation software. A structured outside shooting event will be part of the class. DVD available for purchase in class.
* May 16 to 20 - Photoshop Safari (5-day workshop, Wednesday to Sunday), $500. This 5-day event (50+ hours) will combine both in-field shooting and in-class digital editing using both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements. The overall schedule includes capturing the golden hours of light both early and late, with the bulk of the midday spent at the classroom computers editing the recently captured images. Paarticipants will learn a simple Photoshop/Elements workflow beginning with digital capture, continuing through image editing and culminating with image printing and archiving that can be easily adapted to individual needs. One midday shoot and a boat trip are also planned.
April 28 - Dollmaking: Finding the Little Girl Within (Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) with Zenobia Washington at Waccamaw, $75. Enjoy this popular Gullah dollmaking workshop that is valued by workers in the healing arts, art therapists and/or anyone who might have lost sight of her inner child. Discover the feelings within and how they manifest in your choice of color, fabric, draping and accessories. The product will be greater understanding of self; the byproduct will be a doll. All materials and lunch provided.
April 28 - How to Collect, Organize, Tell and Publish Your Family Stories (Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with Al Perry at Waccamaw, $45. In this intensive one-day session, workshop leader and author Al Perry shares tips and techniques that work for beginners, as well as experienced writers, on how to collect, organize, tell and publish your family stories. Participants will be welcomed and encouraged to submit pages for review and discussion prior to the workshop.
May 5 - Self-Publishing: Buyer Beware (Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with Al Perry at Waccamaw, $45. Technology has made self-publishing easier, less expensive and more common. But is it right for you? This intensive one-day session, led by self-published author Perry, gives you the facts you need to decide and warns you about self-publishing pitfalls.
April 14, April 21, May 5 and May 12 - Birding at Hobcaw (Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon) with Gary Phillips, $30. Join birding authority and newspaper columnist Gary Phillips on an early morning trek into the deep recesses of the 17,500-acre research reserve for a look at spring nesting habitats. These tours will give you an opportunity to learn about our permanent and migratory feathered residents. Different environments (salt marshes, cypress swamps and long leaf forests) are habitats for a variety of birds, including eagles, ospreys, red cockaded woodpeckers, flycatchers, painted buntings and blue grosbeaks.
April 21 and May 19 - Waccamaw River Tour (Saturday, timed to tides) with Marshall Trulock, $25. Gather a half-dozen or a dozen of your friends together and travel the Waccamaw River with the knowledgeable staff of the Georgetown Nautica Marine Center. One or two small boats will depart from the private landing at The Reserve for a one-hour guided tour.
April 3 to May 1 - Farm and Plantation Tours (Tuesday, 4 weeks, no class 4/17, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with Julie Finlayson departing from Conway and North Myrtle Beach, $85+. From Freewood Farms, Indigo Farms, Magnolia Gardens, Orton Plantation and other candidates, participants will choose the destinations where the history and lifestyle of the past will be unveiled. Lunch extra.
April 17 - Historic & Environmental River Adventure (Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) with Karen Fuss and Ben Burroughs, $30. An interactive and informative pontoon boat cruise down the Waccamaw and Pee Dee Rivers. Beginning at the Wacca Wache Marina, the group will learn about the history of this area while viewing several old plantations from the water. Participate in hands-on activities, such as critter collection and identification and water testing, as well as in active discussions about the current and future status of this beautiful blackwater ecosystem.
April 19 - River Heritage Walking Tour of Conway (Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) with Betty Molnar, $20. Following a coffee-and-donut welcome at City Hall, tour this Robert Mills' designed structure, then to the Conway Visitor Center for a look at antebellum Conway, the early days of banking in Horry County, and the office of the first mayor. After a tour of Kingston Presbyterian Church and old village burial grounds, enjoy lunch at the Sidewheeler Restaurant on Conway's beautiful Riverwalk. All inclusive.
May 8 - Awendaw Birds of Prey (Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with Julie Finlayson, departing from Conway and Waccamaw, $35. A van trip and tour of the International Birds of Prey Center in Awendaw which has attracted ornithologists from around the world to study, rehabilitate and release to the wild a vast array of raptors.
May 15 - Spring at Waties Island (Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.) with Karen Fuss, departing from Conway and Waccamaw, $30. Discover the geology and ecology of this uninhabited barrier island just north of Cherry Grove. The day will be full of hands-on activities, such as studying various maps of the area, collecting water quality and plankton samples, and observing and identifying flora and fauna on the island. Free time to explore this unique natural resource of the Grand Strand.
April 2 to 23 - Jewish History of Georgetown and South Carolina (Monday, 4 weeks, 3 to 4:30 p.m.) with Elizabeth Moses at Waccamaw, $45. Trace the fascinating 350-year history of Jews in Georgetown and throughout South Carolina. Through lectures, film and a walking tour of the Georgetown temple, cemetery and Front Street businesses, you will gain an appreciation of Jewish contributions to the Lowcountry.
April 29 - Levine Museum in Charlotte (Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.) with Elizabeth Moses, departing from Conway and Waccamaw, $45. A day trip to Charlotte for lunch (extra) and a private tour of the Levine Museum of the New South for the New Southerner. The New South means people, places and a period of time - from 1865 to today. A special photographic, narrative exhibition, "Families of Abraham," celebrating life and faith traditions of Jewish, Christian and Muslim families in the Charlotte area, will be on display.
