Coastal Carolina University's bands win honors

June 29, 2007

The Coastal Carolina University Bands have been awarded two prestigious honors for the upcoming 2007-08 academic year.

The CCU Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band was selected to perform at the Bands of America Fall Preview Experience held at Fort Mill High School on Sept. 22.

Bands of America is nationally recognized as being at the forefront of cutting edge experiences in American music education. The Bands of America marching events regularly feature high school bands in competition, and college bands in exhibition.

The Coastal Winds, CCU's newest instrumental ensemble, was selected via audition to represent the South Carolina chapter of the College Band Directors National Association at the 2008 South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA) Conference in Charleston on Feb. 7 to 9, 2008. Members of The Coastal Winds are selected by audition from the CCU Symphonic Band. Performance at the SCMEA conference is considered the highest state honor an ensemble can receive. CCU was selected from a pool consisting of all college/university bands in the state.

The bands are under the direction of Jim Tully, director of bands, assisted by Kurry Seymour, director of percussion studies and Coastal's assistant band director.
