CCU's noncredit courses continue summer of learning

Coastal Carolina University's Lifelong Learning offers a variety of summer courses and workshops at University Hall on the CCU main campus in Conway and the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield. A catalog of courses is available at the centers, as well as online at www.coastal.edu/outreach. Registration can be completed in person, by telephone (349-4001 or 349-4030) or through webadvisor.coastal.edu.

Summer Jaunts with Julie on Tuesdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Several day-long adventures with naturalist Julie Finlayson are still open for enrollment, including:

* Riverbanks Zoo Butterfly Garden & Swan Lakes, July 10, $35;

* Fort Sumter and The Hunley, July 17, $45;

* Moncks Corner, Mepkin Abbey and Biedler Forest, July 24, $35;

* SesquiCentennial State Park, July 31, $35.

Critter Collection & Identification with Karen Fuss: Spend the morning like a marine scientist and explore different animals on and around the undeveloped, barrier island called Waties Island. We will search for and identify birds in the salt marsh, then travel to the beach for collection of surf zone critters. Shelling and identifying plankton, some of the smallest organisms, will also be completed by the participants. This class is geared for ages 6 to 99. There will be a little walking on soft sand. Bring a snack, water, hat, sunglasses, bag for collecting shells, binoculars, camera, sunscreen and insect repellant. Monday, July 9, 8 a.m. to noon, $25.

Beginning Watercolor with Tina Cavalieri: Learn all about color, technique, design and methods of applying watercolors. Mondays, July 9 to 30, 1 to 4 p.m., CCU campus, University Hall, $60 + materials.

Angels and Spirits with Sammye Souder: An exploration of the phenomena of the spirit world. Thursdays, July 12 to Aug. 2, noon to 2 p.m., Waccamaw Center, $40.

Inspirational Writing on Waties Island with Jackie Boyce: Spend an evening surrounded by the pristine beauty of Waties Island while you explore its impact on your creativity. Saturday, July 14, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., $25

Self-Publishing: Buyer Beware with Al Perry: Technology has made self-publishing easier, less expensive and much more common. This intensive one-day session, led by self-published author Al Perry, gives you the facts you need to decide (and warns you about self-publishing pitfalls). Saturday, July 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Waccamaw Center, $45.

Photoshop Safari with Bill Jordan: This three-day event (30+ hours) will combine both in-field shooting and in-class digital editing using both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements. The overall schedule includes capturing the golden hours of light both early and late, with the bulk of the midday spent at the classroom computers editing the recently captured images. Learn a simple Photoshop/Elements workflow beginning with digital capture, continuing throughimage editing and culminating with image printing and archiving that can be easily adapted to an individual's needs. One midday shoot and a boat trip planned. Friday to Sunday, July 27 to 29, sunrise to sunset, Waccamaw Center, $300.

Computer Workshops in Conway: Debbie Peret offers "Overview of Digital Photo Processing" (Tuesday, July 10, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., $25) and "Buying and Selling on eBay" (Monday, July 23 to 30, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., $35); Sarah Briggs offers "Virus Protection" (Monday, July 16, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., $25) and an "Overview of Electronic Gadgetry" (Wednesday, July 18, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., $25).

Computer Workshops at Waccamaw: Carol Rose offers single-session workshops Mondays, 9 a.m. to noon, including: "Microsoft PowerPoint" (July 9); "Great Ways to Use Your Computer" (also July 9, 1 to 4 p.m.); "Buying and Selling on eBay" (July 16); "Introduction to Microsoft Excel" (July 23); "How to Mail Merge" (July 30). Each is $25. Lee Ann Tarducci offers four-week courses on "Introduction to Digital Photo Processing" (Mondays, July 9 to 30, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $75) and "Introduction to Web Design" (Wednesdays, July 11 to Aug. 1, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., $75).
