Coastal Carolina University's Lifelong Learning offers a variety of summer courses and workshops at University Hall on the CCU main campus in Conway and the Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield. Summer Jaunts with Julie on Tuesdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Several day-long adventures with naturalist Julie Finlayson are still open for enrollment, including:

Critter Collection & Identification with Karen Fuss: Spend the morning like a marine scientist and explore different animals on and around the undeveloped, barrier island called Waties Island. We will search for and identify birds in the salt marsh, then travel to the beach for collection of surf zone critters. Shelling and identifying plankton, some of the smallest organisms, will also be completed by the participants. This class is geared for ages 6 to 99. There will be a little walking on soft sand. Bring a snack, water, hat, sunglasses, bag for collecting shells, binoculars, camera, sunscreen and insect repellant. Monday, July 9, 8 a.m. to noon, $25.

Beginning Watercolor with Tina Cavalieri: Learn all about color, technique, design and methods of applying watercolors. Mondays, July 9 to 30, 1 to 4 p.m., CCU campus, University Hall, $60 + materials.

Inspirational Writing on Waties Island with Jackie Boyce: Spend an evening surrounded by the pristine beauty of Waties Island while you explore its impact on your creativity. Saturday, July 14, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., $25

Self-Publishing: Buyer Beware with Al Perry: Technology has made self-publishing easier, less expensive and much more common. This intensive one-day session, led by self-published author Al Perry, gives you the facts you need to decide (and warns you about self-publishing pitfalls). Saturday, July 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Waccamaw Center, $45.

Photoshop Safari with Bill Jordan: This three-day event (30+ hours) will combine both in-field shooting and in-class digital editing using both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements. The overall schedule includes capturing the golden hours of light both early and late, with the bulk of the midday spent at the classroom computers editing the recently captured images. Learn a simple Photoshop/Elements workflow beginning with digital capture, continuing throughimage editing and culminating with image printing and archiving that can be easily adapted to an individual's needs. One midday shoot and a boat trip planned. Friday to Sunday, July 27 to 29, sunrise to sunset, Waccamaw Center, $300.
