Bassist Steve Bailey to perform new music at CCU concert

  Steve Bailey
World-class bass player and Coastal Carolina University artist-in-residence Steve Bailey will perform original work from his just-released CD in concert on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall.

Tickets are $8 general admission; $6 alumni and senior citizens and free to Coastal students, faculty and staff with a CCU ID.

Internationally renowned hand drummer Robert Thomas Jr. will be joining Bailey, along with other "surprise guests" who could not be confirmed in time for this release. Thomas is best known as a member of the seminal jazz fusion group Weather Report.

"So low...Solo," Bailey's new release, features arrangements for solo bass and percussion. The CD was recently issued in conjunction with a large bass concert held in New York City.

A Myrtle Beach native, Bailey was awarded full scholarships to North Texas University and University of Miami (Fla.). He joined Dizzy Gillespie's band in 1983 and went on to record and tour with many artists, including Jethro Tull, the Rippingtons, Willie Nelson, Ray Price and Kitaro. He is considered a pioneer of the six-string fretless bass and founded the innovative two bass group, Bass Extremes, with Victor Wooten. Bass Player Magazine said recently that "Steve Bailey is to the Six String Fretless what Christopher Columbus is to America."

For more information, visit his Web site at For tickets, call the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502. The Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
