Coastal presents saxophone program of classical and jazz

For its annual fall concert, Coastal Carolina University's student saxophone ensemble will present a diverse program of classical and jazz compositions. The event, which will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall, is free, but tickets are required.

Noted jazz saxophonist Bob Ackerman and his wife, vocalist Pam Purvis, will also perform with the group. Prior to the event, the couple will hold a jazz clinic workshop with Coastal music students.

Ackerman is known as the "Mouthpiece Doctor" and is an authority on vintage woodwind instruments. He is a National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient for his compositions and has performed with both the Steve Reich and Philip Glass ensembles. Purvis, a native Louisianan, and Ackerman have been married for 27 years and have made nine recordings together.

The concert will feature the music of composers such as Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, Lennie Niehaus and Ackerman, along with pieces by Mozart, Schubert, John Phillip Sousa and others. Dan O'Reilly, a teaching associate at Coastal who performs in various bands and orchestras around the Grand Strand, directs the band.

For more information, contact the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502. Tickets may be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the boc office or prior to the concert.
