Coastal's Wall Building back in business

March 5, 2008

The E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration Building will be open on Thursday, March 6 for all classes and activities as regularly scheduled.

Air quality tests conducted by the Conway Fire Department last night and this morning found no indication of an air quality concern. As a precautionary measure, Coastal Carolina University President David DeCenzo called in the Phoenix Enviro Corp. to do further assessments of the air quality in the building, and these tests confirmed the safety of the building.

The safety measures were initiated last night after a Coastal employee was treated at an area hospital with respiratory problems.

"The safety of our students, faculty and staff is of paramount importance," said DeCenzo. "We will continue to carefully monitor the air quality in the Wall Building." In addition to the continuing service of Phoenix, the president has ordered the immediate installation of carbon monoxide detectors throughout the building and in all university buildings with similar heating and cooling systems.

"This morning's situation also provided an opportunity for us to utilize our new emergency notification systems, which include CCUAlert, a text messaging service; mass e-mail; and Web site notices," said DeCenzo. "The initial reports indicate that the procedures were effective, although we will continue to evaluate and refine our emergency preparedness systems," he said.

The president acknowledges the efforts of the Conway Fire Department, and the university departments of Public Safety/Fire and Safety and Facilities Management for their diligence and responsiveness to the situation.

"We also appreciate the efforts of the local media in helping to get the word out and for their continuing concern and support of Coastal Carolina University," he said.
