Documentary addresses women in politics

September 18, 2008

"Running in High Heels," a documentary about women and politics, will be shown Thursday, Sept. 25 at 4:30 p.m. in the Wall Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The event, co-sponsored by the University's Fred Hicks Speaker Series and the Women's and Gender Studies Program, is free and open to the public.

Written and directed by Maryann Breschard, the film follows the campaign of a 29-year-old woman running for a State Senate seat in New York. Interviews and commentary by notable women from the right and left of the political spectrum are intercut into the narrative. The documentary explores the power of stereotypes in society and asks the question: if women represent a majority of the population why don't more of them hold political office?

Coastal Carolina University faculty members Holley Tankersley, assistant professor of politics, and Julinna Oxley, assistant professor of philosophy, will moderate a discussion after the film. Refreshments will be provided by the University's Women's and Gender Studies Program. For more information call 349-6548.
