Written in 1888, "Miss Julie" is a powerful, naturalistic drama about how social and sexual roles were constricted by class divisions in the 19th century. Raised by her pro-feminist mother and traditionalist father, Julie is ill at ease in the aristocratic society of her upbringing. During a Midsummer's Eve celebration she enters into forbidden territory by entering into a relationship with Jean, her father's valet. "Miss Julie" provoked a scandal when it was first presented and was banned in many parts of Europe. The production is directed by John Woodson, a guest director who is working with Atlantic Stage here on the Grand Strand. Cast members include Coastal Carolina University students: Amelia Hammond as Miss Julie; Chad Bagwell as Jean; and Sarah Mullins as Kristen.
