Coastal Carolina University professor Brandon Palmer will give a talk on "Pearl Harbor: From the Japanese Viewpoint" on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at the University's Waccamaw Higher Education Center in Litchfield. The discussion is free and open to the public.

This is the first event in the University's "Creativity and Conflict" dialog series, sponsored annually by the Board of Visitors of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

Palmer, an assistant professor of history and an Asian specialist, will lead a discussion that challenges established assumptions about the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. In his presentation, he will explore the role that Pearl Harbor played in Japan's grand strategy and whether or not the attack was truly unprovoked.

Palmer joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2007. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in international and area studies from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Hawaii. His area of expertise is Asian history, particularly the Korean population in the United States as well as Imperial Japan's mobilization of Korea during the Second World War.
