Campus Safety Conference being held Feb. 25 to 27

The 2009 Linda B. Floyd and South Carolina College Personnel Association Joint Campus Safety Conference is being held Wednesday, Feb. 25 through Friday, Feb. 27 at Kingston Plantation Embassy Suites.

Some 155 registrants from across the Southeast will be attending. The conference was renamed in February 2008 in honor of Floyd, a member of the S.C. Higher Education Foundation, for her service as a member of the board and her dedication to campus safety throughout the state. Linda and husband Dalton Floyd live on the Grand Strand and are avid supporters of higher education statewide.

Sessions of special interest include:

* Keynote address, "Emerging issues in safety and security on college campuses" by W. Scott Lewis, 5:45 p.m. Wednesday. Lewis is a partner with the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management and serves as associate general counsel for Saint Mary's College in Indiana. He was previously an assistant vice provost at the University of South Carolina.

* "Gangs," with Special Agent Rob Walzenhofer, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 10:15 a.m. Thursday

* Student Forum, "Everything you wanted to know from law enforcement but were afraid to ask," 4:15 to 5:30 p.m., Thursday

* General session, "Prevention vs. Privacy: Mental Health and related issues on the higher education campus," 8:30 a.m. Friday

* Speakers panel featuring Scott Lewis, John Lowery, Kimberly Novak and Carolyn Wolf, 10 a.m. Friday

The South Carolina Higher Education Foundation is sponsoring the safety conference, along with the South Carolina College Personnel Association (SCCPA) and the South Carolina Campus Law Enforcement Association (SCCLEA). The theme of the conference is "A Decade of Commitment, Collaboration and Communication."
