Summer lifelong learning courses offered to teens

Summer courses in music and art are being offered at Coastal Carolina University's Waccamaw Higher Education Center, sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Classes are open to all students ages 13 and older.

Guitar and bass classes will be led by performing and recording artist Doug Fankhauser from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays from June 9 to July 28. The fee is $50 per person; all students must supply their own instrument.

Piano lessons are offered by veteran teacher Paulette Olivera-Kashtan from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays from June 3 to July 29; or with David Haynes from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25. The eight-week course is $75 per person, and all students must supply their own keyboard and headset. The one-day workshop is $55 per person and $25 for the manual and CD.

Learn to appreciate opera -- considered by many as the ultimate art form, embracing orchestra, vocals, acting, set and costume design. Rita Martino will introduce Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel" from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17. Mozart's "The Magic Flute" will be screened from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 15. Each lecture and film presentation is $10 per person.

Learn how to create fused glass pendants, earrings, photo frames, platters and Christmas ornaments with award-winning glass artist Suz Mole. Offered throughout June and July, each two-day class begins with a review of fused glass fundamentals and history. Workshop fees range from $35 to $45, and all glass, findings and tools will be provided for a material fee of $20 to $30.

JoEllen Langley's eight-week Starshine Performance Training course, culminating in a public performance, is offered from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursdays from June 18 to Aug. 6. The course is open to all students interested in gaining confidence while performing. All talents are welcome including singing, dancing, instrumental, public speaking, karaoke, acting, etc.

The Starshine Summer Day Camps, led by piano and voice instructor JoEllen Langley, are exclusively for middle school and high school students. Rising 10th to 12th graders can participate in the program from 1 to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 15-18 and June 22-25. For $160, students can participate in a two-week intensive performance training for voice and instruments. The course helps students gain confidence before an audience and learn to select appropriate audition material. Rising 7th to 9th graders may participate in the program from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 13-16 and/or July 20-23. Students can participate in the musical and performance exploration for $120 per week.
