Steve Bailey concert 'pushes limits'

September 10, 2009

"Pushing the Limits," a concert of cutting-edge new music featuring three of the world's best musicians on their respective instruments -- Steve Bailey on bass, Howard Levy on harmonica and keyboards, plus special guest Jeff Sipe on drums -- will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in Wheelwright Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University.

General admission is $10 to $15 depending on seat choice; alumni, senior citizens (65+), Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members and teens (ages 11-17) get a $5 discount; and children (10 and under) are $5. Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) students are allowed one ticket per valid ID at $5, and University and HGTC faculty and staff are allowed two tickets per valid ID at $10 each.

Bailey, artist-in-residence at Coastal Carolina University, is famous for his pioneering work with the six-string fretless bass; BassPlayer Magazine has called him "the Christopher Columbus of the six-string fretless bass." His career has spanned the New York and Los Angeles recording studios, and he has collaborated with a wide variety of artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Jethro Tull and Willie Nelson.

Bailey and legendary bassist Victor Wooten formed Bass Extremes, a cutting edge, two-bass group that produces CDs, DVDs and instructional books, and hosts clinics and camps around the world.

Howard Levy, one of the original members of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, is the world's pre-eminent harmonica virtuoso and a world-class pianist. Levy was awarded a Grammy in 1997 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for his performance in Bela Fleck and the Fleckstones' live recording of their 1991 song "The Sinister Minister." He tours the world performing solo harmonica and piano concerts.

Jeff Sipe specializes in virtuoso rock and jazz fusion. He is a founding member of the seminal fusion group Aquarium Rescue Unit and the Cajun Slamgrass Band. He tours with Phish's Trey Anastasio and the Zambiland Orchestra.

Call Wheelwright Auditorium Box Office at 843-349-2502 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to purchase tickets.
