Richard E. Lapchick, international expert on sport and social issues, will speak at Coastal Carolina University at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

Lapchick is the director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport and the founder and president of the National Consortium for Academics and Sport. He is also a regular columnist for The Sports Business Journal and ESPN.com. Lapchick's presentation will address race, gender and ethical issues in contemporary sport. His talk is the culmination of the 2009 "Sport Studies and Career Day," a day-long symposium sponsored by the Recreation and Sport Management program.

Lapchick has appeared numerous times on national broadcasts such as "Good Morning America," "The Today Show," "ABC World News" and "CBS Evening News." He has received eight honorary degrees and was named the Florida Public Citizen of the Year in 2006. Lapchick is also the recipient of several humanitarian awards including the Arthur Ashe Voice of Conscience Award, the Women's Sports Foundation Presidents Award and the Ralph Bunche International Peace Award. For six years he has been named one of the 100 most powerful people in sports and was recently named one of the 100 most influential sports educators in America.

Lapchick's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport is a comprehensive resource for issues related to gender and race in amateur, collegiate and professional sports.
