Coastal Carolina University presents Spectrum concert

Coastal Carolina University’s bands and chamber ensembles will present the 6th annual Spectrum Concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24 in Wheelwright Auditorium.

The concert will include performances from the University’s Flute Choir, the Sax Ensemble, the CCU Samba Bateria, C-PAN (steel drum band), Jazz After Hours Big Band, the Guitar Quartet, the Coastal Brass Quintet, the CCU Spirit of the Chanticleer marching band drum line and the Symphonic Band. The program will include styles ranging from classical to jazz show tunes. The Symphonic Band will perform selections from the Disney Pixar movie “Up,” which will feature members of the Coastalettes Dance Team, music from Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide,” and will close the concert with John Phillips Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

General admission is $9; alumni and senior citizens (65+) as well as Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members $7; teens (11-17) are $3; and children (10 and under) are free. Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) students are allowed one ticket per valid ID at $3; CCU and HGTC faculty and staff are allowed two tickets per valid ID at $3 each.

The Flute Choir, directed by Amy Tully, assistant professor of music, is composed of five members of the flute family: piccolo, Eb flute, C flute, alto flute and bass flute.

The Coastal Brass Quintet is directed by CCU’s Assistant Director of Bands, Matthew M. Shrewsbury, and performs a variety of brass literature from Renaissance to modern. The group is regularly featured at CCU events and concerts.

The Guitar Quartet is directed by Dan Hull, instructor of music, and features an eclectic mix of music from modern to jazz to classical. The Sax Ensemble, directed by Dan O’Reilly, instructor of music, performs classical and jazz as well as popular music. O’Reilly also directs the Jazz After Hours band which specializes in American forms of swing, jazz and big band music. The CCU Spirit of the Chanticleer Marching Band drum line, directed by Jesse Willis, assistant professor and director of percussion studies, consists of a full drum line and front ensemble or "pit." Willis also directs the C-PAN steel drum band, a 30-piece steel band, and the CCU Samba Bateria, a Brazilian percussion ensemble.

The Symphonic Band, which has been a mainstay at CCU since 2001, is directed by James Tully, professor of music and director of bands at Coastal Carolina University.
