Lifelong Learning offers new fall classes

A second series of noncredit courses will be offered this fall by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Coastal Carolina University’s three outreach locations. Most courses start Oct. 25 and continue for varying durations through mid-December.

The centers include Conway Foundation Center on U.S. 501 adjacent to Myrtle Beach Automotive; Myrtle Beach Higher Education Center located at 79th Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass; and Waccamaw Higher Education Center located on Willbrook Boulevard just off U.S. 17 in Litchfield. Participating in OLLI courses requires membership ($20, good through Sept. 30) and the individual course fees.

Fall offerings available in Conway include:

* Watercolor Painting: Learn all about color and mixing, technique, design, composition and different methods of applying watercolor.

* Beyond Basics: Intermediate PC Skills. The course is designed as a follow-up to PC Basics for Beginners and will cover more advanced computer skills.

Fall offerings available in Myrtle Beach:

* Watercolor Painting: Learn all about color and mixing, technique, design, composition and different methods of applying watercolor.

* Understanding Medicare: This three-part course will cover the basics of Medicare including basics (Part A/Part B deductible and skilled nursing/ home health care), Medicare supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans.

* Practical Photo Editing: Learn how to organize photos on your PC, install free photo editor programs, create a photo CD or DVD and share photos online with web albums.

* Microsoft Excel: Learn how to use Microsoft’s most popular spreadsheet program to recalculate and analyze data and generate charts, graphs and reports.

* Computers and Genealogy II: The course covers vital records, military records, land records and naturalization records.

* Card Crafting: Learn how to create greeting cards using techniques such as dry embossing, paper embroidery, quilling, needle felting and paper quilting.

* Stained Glass: Learn the basics of glass cutting, grinding, polishing and placement, as well as design skills and foil soldering.

* Microsoft Word: Learn to use Microsoft Word to create memoirs, newsletters, flyers, brochures and business cards.

* Beyond Basics: Intermediate PC Skills. The course is designed as a follow-up to PC Basics for Beginners and will cover more advanced computer skills.

* Electronic Social Networking: This course is an overview of text messaging, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and more.

* So you want to be a collector? A veteran antique appraiser will give you the tools you need to start a collection.

* Batik: Painting on Silk. Learn how to transfer a design onto silk fabric and apply resists using hot wax and stop flow.

* Beginning Mosaics: Learn about techniques and materials needed to create mosaics; students will make four to six mosaics in class.

* Ballroom Dancing: Learn the key steps of the tango, waltz, foxtrot and swing.

* Keeping your PC Healthy: Learn how to clean up your desktop, uninstall unnecessary programs, tidy up Internet Explorer, organize your files and more.

* Duplicate Bridge: The course is designed for bridge players seeking to step up to competitive bridge.

Fall offerings available in Waccamaw:

* Card crafting: Learn how to create greeting cards using techniques such as, dry embossing, paper embroidery, quilling, needle felting and paper quilting.

* Google for Everything: Learn to use Google search and advanced search for images, videos, maps, books and more.

* Sublime Terror or Shock and Awe: Students will explore short stories, novels and films of the classic horror genre that have appealed universally through generations.

* So you want to be a collector?: A veteran antique appraiser will give you the tools you need to start a collection.

* History of Latin America: From the discovery of the new continent and the life and legacy of Christopher Columbus through European rivalries, the fall of the Aztecas, Mayas and Incas, through colonization, independence, immigration, dictatorships and democracy to Latin America today.

* Practical Photo Editing: Learn how to organize photos on your PC, install free photo editor programs, create a photo CD or DVD and share photos online with web albums.

* Intermediate/Advanced Guitar: The course builds on what students learn in the basic course and covers chord formation, voices and transportation.

* Beyond Basics: Intermediate PC Skills. The course is designed as a follow-up to PC Basics for Beginners and will cover more advanced computer skills.

* Poetry: When to edit out and when to edit in. Students will study the language and writing styles of three poets and discuss ways to help a poet understand language and images that communicate to the reader.

* Fearless Public Speaking: The course will guide students through practical, time-tested techniques for developing a speech for any occasion.
