Bassists Steve Bailey and Grammy-winning Victor Wooten to play at CCU

February 21, 2011

Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten will bring their basses back to the beach in a concert at Coastal Carolina University’s Recital Hall, Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3.

This is the second stop, after Miami, on the duo’s “Pushing the Limits Volume 3” Southeast tour, which will feature music from their Bass Extremes project and recent solo releases. Bailey, CCU associate professor in music and artist in residence, has played with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Jethro Tull and Willie Nelson. Multiple Grammy Award-winning Wooten is a founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

“It’s rare to be able to hear someone with creds like Victor here in Myrtle Beach,” says Bailey. “We found out early on that bass players getting together is an accident waiting to happen – it’s like trying to get two elephants to ballet dance together. But when we met each other in San Francisco in 1991, we had a chemistry that’s unheard of, and we’ve collaborated on CDs, clinics, DVDs and conferences since then.”

Bailey says, “Surprise guest performers are always a possibility, and ticketholders should bring a question or two, as we are prone to interact directly with the audience in intimate venues like Edwards.”

General admission tickets are $20; tickets for CCU and Horry-Georgetown Technical College students, staff and alumni, as well as senior citizens, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members, teens ages 11-17 and children under age 10, are $15.

Tickets may be picked up from the Wheelwright Box Office from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or at the Recital Hall prior to the performance. For additional information, call the Wheelwright Box office at 843-349-2502.
