CCU Edible Book Fair to feed creativity

March 15, 2011

Read a book and eat it, too, at the Edible Book Fair to be held from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, April 11, at Coastal Carolina University’s Kimbel Library.

CCU students, faculty and staff, along with members of the community, are invited to create and submit edible books, which must be at least partially edible representations of any written work.

According to organizer John Watts, CCU reference and outreach librarian, submissions can look like a book in form and shape, be inspired by a scene or a character in a book, reproduce a book cover, or just have something to do with books in general. Last year’s winner was Susan McLean, with her confection of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” a completely edible recreation of Huck and Jim’s raft floating down the Mississippi River.

Participants can drop off submissions at the library from 8 a.m. to noon the day of the fair. First-, second- and third-place winners will be determined by votes made by the fair’s attendees. Each student vote will double as a raffle ticket to win an iPod Shuffle. The top three contestants will win gift certificates to Papa John’s and Java City. After the awards, edible books will be served for all to enjoy.
