CCU to perform ‘Scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan’

March 23, 2011

Coastal Carolina University’s Departments of Music and Theatre will join together to perform the comedic “Scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan,” at 3 p.m. March 26 and 27 in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

The CCU Opera Workshop event, directed by professor David Bankston, with musical direction by Steven Gross, will be a tribute to the Victorian era operettas by librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, including “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “The Mikado” and “The Pirates of Penzance.”

“This ‘Pirates’ is not your mother’s ‘Pirates of Penzance,’" says Gross. "There will be plenty of contemporary touches, which Gilbert and Sullivan did themselves when they premiered their own operettas.”
