Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist Mark Hollmann and playwright Adrien Royce will lead Coastal Carolina University theatre students in special readings of their new musical, “Bigfoot and Other Lost Souls,” in the Edwards Theatre of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

The readings, part of a two-credit Maymester class, will culminate with two performances, free and open to the public, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 15. The musical will be directed by CCU adjunct theatre professor John Woodson and Stephen Gross (music), CCU associate professor of theatre.

“This is a great way for students to learn from and be in front of industry professionals who are at the top of their game,” says Ken Martin, chair of CCU’s Department of Theatre.

Hollmann received the Tony, National Broadway Theatre and Obie awards for his score to “Urinetown the Musical,” which has been performed on Broadway and around the world.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Chicago, where he received the Louis J. Sudler Prize in the Creative and Performing Arts. In 2010, Hollmann was elected to a three-year term on the Tony Nominating Committee. He lives in Manhattan with his wife, Jillian, and their son, Oliver.

Adrien Royce describes “Bigfoot” as a musical fable based on a true story. Her plays have been produced/workshopped by Chicago Dramatists, Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe, West Bank Downstairs Theatre, Love Creek Productions and Turnip Theatre Company. Her work has been honored in numerous festivals and awards programs, including Jane Chambers, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and the New American Theatre. She lives in Manhattan with her husband, Jesus Diaz.
