Fire damage fixed, residence hall reopens

December 8, 2011

A Coastal Carolina University residence hall damaged by fire this past summer has been repaired. University Place building 128 reopens to residents on Friday, Dec. 9.

On July 31, lightning struck the residence hall, causing a fire on the top floor. The building was unoccupied at the time, and there were no injuries. Some 57 students who were originally assigned to live in the building were reassigned to other campus housing as the building could not be restored in time for the Fall 2011 semester. Eighteen of the students originally assigned to the building have chosen to return to that dorm. The remaining spaces will be filled by incoming spring semester students and some continuing students.

University Place is located a half of a mile south of campus off S.C. 544. It is owned by the Student Housing Foundation and managed by University Housing on behalf of CCU.
