CCU hosting Careers with a Cause event on campus

March 30, 2012

Coastal Carolina University presents Careers with a Cause, an all-day event that encourages students to explore careers and organizations dedicated to addressing important causes and issues, on Tuesday, April 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Prince Lawn. There will also be a special screening of the documentary, "For Tomorrow, The TOMS Shoes Story," at 7 p.m. in Room 309 in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration. The event is free and open to the public.

Many local and national agencies and organizations will gather on Prince Lawn during the day to educate attendees on careers that make a difference in the lives of others through a nonprofit structure, charitable giving or purpose-driven cause. There will also be games, activities, entertainment and refreshments.

One of the key events on the day's agenda will be TOMS One Day Without Shoes. The lawn will be a "barefoot zone" to commemorate the mission of TOMS Shoes. Blake Mycoskie, founder of the company, created his company with a philanthropic vision: for every pair of shoes ordered, TOMS gives a pair to a child without shoes. Attendees are invited to take off their shoes to feel for a moment what it's like for those without the luxury of proper footwear.

In the evening, all are invited to the Start Something That Matters party from 7 to 9 p.m. where the documentary, "For Tomorrow, The TOMS Shoes Story," will be screened. The film focuses on Mycoskie as he journeys to the remote villages of Argentina where he and company members hand-placed 10,000 pairs of shoes on the feet on children in need. The screening will be followed by a panel presentation from community leaders who will share their inspirational stories about how they made a difference.

The all-day event is sponsored by CCU Career Services Center, Student Activities and Leadership and the TOMS Campus Club. For more information about the event, contact Eileen Soisson, coordinator of employer relations, at 843-349-2889.
